Legend: The prickly thistle has been the national emblem of Scotland for centuries. The story goes that the Thistle saved Scotland from a Norse invasion. For more than 600 years Scotland was part of the Kingdom of Norway. In 1263 King Alexander III made a claim on Kintyre & the Western Isles. The Nordic King Haakon responded by invading Scoland with a large force. Under the cover of darkness the Norsemen tried the element of surprise - they took off their footwear to move more quietly. However they came across the prickly thistle underfoot and instinctively cried out in pain, alerting the Scots to their presence. The Scottish Warriors promptly responded saving Scotland from invasion. The Norsemen were finally defeated at Largs in Ayrshire & the disputed territories were returned. The Thistle was first used on silver coins issued by James III in 1470, and has been used ever since.
